Sizzling Summer Scorcher: Weekend Heatwave to Trigger Thunderstorms - But Not Without a Fight!
Weekend's turbo heat concludes with incoming thunderstorms
Prepare for a hot weekend in Germany as temperatures soar and storms rumble in. Get your sunscreen ready as temperatures both day and night will be feeling tropical, but don't forget your rain gear as thunderstorms could ruin your sunshine!
Germany's been basking in a perfect summer with clear skies, plenty of sunshine, and comfortable temperatures - a dream come true for locals. But the heatwave heading our way from Spain via France might change that.
Saturday's the longest day of the year, and it's set to heat up. North Germany can look forward to a pleasant 26°C, while the southwestern regions will sweat it out at 33°C. Coastal areas will have the luxury of cooler highs at 23°C.
FYI: Ozone levels are unusually high, causing some discomfort - headaches and coughing. That delightful warm embrace will be even warmer. Records for the hottest day of the year are in jeopardy as temperatures on Sunday could surpass existing records. Most regions will hit 30-34°C, but the Rhine will see even higher readings between 35-37°C, breaking past 2025 records. The current highest June temperature of 39.6°C, set in Bernburg an der Saale on June 30, 2019, still reigns supreme.
Secure those sunglasses, prepare for up to 16 hours of non-stop sunshine! However, clouds are gathering in the west and northwest by afternoon, and it won't be long before thunderstorms make their appearance.
Fast forward to Monday, when a low-pressure system moves westward into Germany, pushing the heat towards the east and southeast. When hot, dry air clashes with cool, moist air, prepare for a thunderstorm smackdown! While not every region will be hit, southeastern Baden-Württemberg, portions of Bavaria (Schwaben, Allgäu, Upper and Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate), and possibly the Upper Palatinate will be prime targets for intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and large hailstones. Other areas will experience localized thunderstorms, hail, and strong wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h. Hailstones may reach up to three to eight centimeters in diameter, potentially causing damage to vehicles, buildings, and crops. Storms will form initially in western Germany and move towards the central, southern, and eastern regions throughout the day and night, mainly affecting eastern and southeastern areas.
After the storm, the heat will subside. The north will chill out with temperatures dropping to 19°C, while the southeast will still be holding on to 30°C. Conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday will remain similar, before another temperature rise is expected.
