Spain Braces for Ongoing Heatwave with Temperatures Reaching 40 Degrees

The weather forecast for Spain from August 29 to 31, 2025, indicates a prolonged period of extremely high temperatures and heatwave conditions, with maximums reaching the upper 30s to low 40s °C in many regions, particularly in the southern and inland areas.

Heat warnings are currently active in parts of Spain, including the Andalucía region, due to a heat dome affecting western, central, and southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish state meteorological agency, Aemet, has issued alerts (yellow and amber) for much of Spain, except for northern coastal areas and the Canary Islands, where temperatures are expected to remain lower.

The extreme conditions are due to a mass of warm, dry air from Africa combined with intense solar radiation, causing maximums to reach 38-41°C, especially in provinces like Malaga and the broader Andalucía region. These conditions increase wildfire risk and drought severity.

Regarding wind conditions, while specific daily wind details for late August are not explicitly stated in the available forecasts, the region can expect variable winds, with some areas experiencing occasional strong or gusty winds that can influence wildfire behavior and outdoor conditions. No extreme wind warnings have been reported for this period, but mountain stages of events like La Vuelta hint at unpredictable winds, especially in elevated areas.

For Friday to Sunday, the following weather patterns are expected:

  • Heat warnings in effect, especially southern and central regions.
  • Maximum temperatures predominantly in the upper 30s to low 40s °C.
  • Minimum nighttime temperatures remaining relatively high due to heatwave persistence.
  • Wind conditions mostly moderate but with regional variability, including possible gusts in mountainous zones.

These conditions reflect an intense and prolonged heat dome pattern impacting large parts of Spain and Europe, with no relief expected through the weekend.

On Sunday, temperatures will exceed 40 degrees in extensive areas of the southern Atlantic-facing slope. In the east and Cantabrian region, temperatures will begin to drop slightly, as will the northern plateau and the Ebro Valley, but they will rise slightly in the rest, especially on the southern peninsula's coasts. On the contrary, decreases are expected in the west of Galicia, locally significant on the Atlantic coast, while in the rest of the territories, no changes are expected.

Clear skies are expected in the Balearic Islands, and cloudy skies with the possibility of some isolated showers in Teide in the north of the Canary Islands. In the afternoon, cloud development is expected in inland areas, which may leave some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the mountainous areas of the northern half. However, the sky will be clear in the Balearic Islands.

On Saturday, the weather will be marked by anticyclonic weather and the predominance of high pressures. Maximum temperatures are expected to increase in the northern half of the peninsula, especially in Cantabria. In the afternoon, cloud development is expected in inland areas, potentially leading to some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the mountains.

On Saturday, temperatures will again put the country on mainly orange alert, except for the Basque Country, Madrid, Cantabria, and the Canary Islands, where the yellow level will be active. Significant decreases are expected in Cantabria and Galicia on Saturday; in the rest, no changes are expected.
