Weekend train disruptions between Clermont-Ferrand and Paris in France announced for the summer season
Heatwave Alert Across France: Precautions, Cancellations, and Record-Breaking Temperatures
France is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, with 68 departments under heatwave alert, and several regions experiencing record-breaking temperatures. The ongoing heatwave has necessitated precautions to protect public health and safety, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Taking Precautions During the Heatwave
To minimize heat-related illnesses, it is advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours (around noon to 4 pm). Staying in the shade or indoors with cooling if possible is strongly recommended. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeine is also crucial. Light, loose, and breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen are essential when outside. Regular self-cooling methods, such as taking cool showers or applying cool water to the skin and clothes, are also advised. Limit physical activity or strenuous work to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Vulnerable people, such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses, should be regularly checked on. Road travel between noon and 4 pm should be avoided due to the extreme heat potentially affecting roads and vehicles.
Impact on Public Transport
The heatwave has led to the cancellation of train trips on the Clermont-Ferrand-Paris line due to high temperatures and the aim of preventing potential air conditioning failures. The affected trains are 50-year-old Corail trains. It is important to note that the alert regarding travel by train on this line has ended.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
The heatwave has resulted in new all-time temperature records being broken in several regions. Granes (Aude) recorded a temperature of 41.1°C, breaking last year's record. Chalon-sur-Saône (Saône-et-Loire) reached a temperature of 39.8°C, surpassing the heatwave record from 2003.
Government Preparations
The government has anticipated the potential health impacts of the ongoing heatwave. Hospitals are prepared to respond to the health issues arising from the heatwave, as assured by Health Minister Catherine Vautrin on Monday. Prefectures have advised the public to take proper precautions to avoid heatstroke or fainting, especially at these extreme temperature levels.
Heatwave Alerts
An orange heatwave alert will cover most of France, with Aude, Isère, Rhône, Drôme, and Ardèche remaining under red heatwave alert from Wednesday noon. These alerts indicate high heat risk requiring particular vigilance. The heatwave is expected to last for several days, as indicated by the ongoing red heatwave alerts in the aforementioned regions, and the orange heatwave alerts covering most of France.
These precautions aim to reduce heat-related illnesses, help manage wildfire risks, and prevent accidents linked to extreme temperatures. It is essential to stay informed and follow official alerts and updates during this period.
