Weekend Riddle: Embracing the rhythm of garments
In the latest edition of the NPR Sunday Puzzle, participants were tasked with an intriguing anagram challenge. Last week's puzzle was set by Peter Gwinn, a writer for the popular radio show "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!".
The puzzle was based on the classic illustrated children's book, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. The challenge was to rearrange the 26 letters of the book title to name a famous film director and a noted role on stage.
The solution to this week's challenge, if you haven't guessed it yet, is Stanley Kubrick for the film director and stage player for the theatrical role. Kubrick, a renowned name in the film industry, directed iconic films such as "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "The Shining". The phrase "stage player" is a recognised term in the world of theatre, referring to an actor who performs on stage.
The on-air challenge this week also involves an anagram, asking for the name of something worn in two syllables, which can be worn by men, women, or both. Examples of answers include Racket (Jacket), Lackeys (Lacey), Gofers (Garters), Honcho (Joncho), Candles (Sandals), Venoms (Veils), Bowsers (Blouses), Kittens (Kittens), Starry (Starry), Woody (Woody), Better (Bettor), and Wordle (World).
In addition to this, the letters can be rearranged to name two things you can find inside a hospital. One of these items is four letters long, and the other is three letters long.
The challenge is hosted by mathpuzzle.com and listeners whose answers are selected win a chance to play the on-air puzzle. So, if you think you've got what it takes, why not give it a try? The deadline for submitting answers is Thursday, August 21st at 3 p.m. ET. Good luck!
