In the year 1980, the silver screen welcomed a vibrant and eccentric adaptation of the almost half-century-old comic series, "Flash Gordon." Produced by Dino De Laurentiis and featuring a theme song by Queen, the film was a colourful spectacle that promised an exciting journey into the unknown.

The story begins with a glimpse of Earth reminiscent of the old Godzilla films, surrounded by a target cross from outer space. Three main characters, Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Dr. Hans Zarkov, find themselves in an unexpected encounter when their plane crash-lands, bringing them together.

As the plot unfolds, Flash, Dale, and Dr. Zarkov are taken captive and travel through a wormhole directly into the realm of Mongo. Upon arrival, they are presented to Ming, the Emperor of Mongo, who is bored and sees Earth as a toy to play with.

Ming's daughter, Aura, secretly brings Flash back to life, setting the stage for a complex web of alliances and rivalries. Flash is taken to the realm of Prince Barin, who initially considers Flash his enemy due to a spark between Aura and Barin.

The movie is known for its colourful costumes, a supervillain with aristocratic diabolical charm, clumsy heroes, flying humans with an attack formation, and questionable rear projections. Timothy Dalton's character, with a memorable gun and a great pornstache, even gets a James Bond moment.

Ornella Muti and Melody Anderson are depicted in lascivious poses and revealing outfits, adding to the film's distinctive style. The movie was inspired by George Lucas' success with "Star Wars," and it certainly carries a similar spirit of adventure.

However, the film did not fare well at the box office, and it was often referred to as glossy trash at its finest. Despite its commercial disappointment, "Flash Gordon" remains a memorable piece of 80s cinema, showcasing a unique blend of science fiction, action, and campy humour.

One notable aspect of the film is the music. The original 1980 film version of the music for the film "Flash Gordon" was composed by Queen and produced by Brian May. However, no verified information could be found regarding the music producer for a potential 2025 "Flash Gordon" film announcement.

In the end, "Flash Gordon" offers a nostalgic trip through a time when science fiction films were bold, colourful, and unapologetically over-the-top. It's a film that, despite its flaws, has managed to leave a lasting impression on audiences and remains a beloved piece of pop culture history.
