Weekend marks the end of the heat wave - shift in weather brings rain
As the week commences, Germany is set to experience a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels, particularly in the south and central regions. The peak of the heatwave is forecast for Wednesday, with temperatures in some areas reaching between 35°C and 40°C, including parts of northern and western Germany. Berlin and northeastern Germany could see highs around 38–39°C, while much of the country will have temperatures consistently above 30°C during the day.
However, a glimmer of hope is on the horizon as indications suggest that relief from the Atlantic may start to arrive later in the week, potentially bringing cooler, more humid air and increasing the chance for thunderstorms, particularly in northern and western regions. This shift could potentially alleviate the heatwave's intensity, although the core of the heat will persist for most regions through midweek.
The main risk for severe weather, such as strong storms or heavy thunderstorms, remains more concentrated near northern Iberia and France, where there is a sharp temperature contrast. In Germany, while the heat remains the primary concern, there is a possibility of localized thunderstorms, especially if the cooler Atlantic air penetrates further inland.
Throughout the week, the risk of wildfires, transport disruptions, and possible buckling of roads due to the heat remains high. The remainder of the week will remain very hot, especially for central and southern Germany through Thursday, with only gradual and patchy cooling likely toward the weekend, mainly in the northwest. Thunderstorms may occur sporadically, but the main hazard remains the extreme heat.
As the week begins, the weather will be changeable across the country, with some regions, such as the north, experiencing cooler temperatures and rain. Conversely, the southeast is expected to see longer periods of sunshine, potentially causing temperatures to reach 30°C. The maximum temperatures will range from 19 to 30°C from northwest to southeast.
Meanwhile, in the city of Hamm, residents are being honoured for their environmental efforts, and Autobahn GmbH expects traffic jams around the city during the summer holidays. News updates from Hamm also include information about the Environmental Award and summer holiday traffic.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, frequent and heavy rain is expected in some areas, which will at least partially alleviate the drought. It is important to note that the heatwave has ended in many parts of Germany, and while the weather will remain warm and summery in some parts of southern Germany, the east is expected to receive the least rain.
Stay tuned for further updates on the weather situation across Germany.
