Weekend film recommendation by Chrischi
In the heart of the 1980s, the horror genre was given a fresh twist with the release of "Maxxxine". This third installment of an unusual trilogy, directed by Ti West, sees Maxine Minx transitioning from her adult film career to serious acting.
Set in 1985, Los Angeles is gripped by fear as the infamous serial killer, dubbed the "Night Stalker", terrorizes the city. His chilling list of victims includes young strippers and prostitutes, causing widespread panic. The plot unfolds as Maxine Minx, the sole survivor from the first part, becomes a porn star in "Maxxxine".
As the story unfolds, Maxine finds herself embroiled in the investigation, attracting the attention of detectives Torres (played by Bobby Cannavale) and Williams (Michelle Monaghan). Kevin Bacon delivers a compelling performance as a sleazy private investigator, adding another layer to the intrigue.
The film's production design, hairstyles, and soundtrack hark back to the era, evoking the feel of classic John Carpenter films. The Eighties milieu is captured perfectly, providing a fun and nostalgic backdrop to the chilling narrative.
However, the filming of "Maxxxine" was not without its controversies. Reports suggest that Goth, who plays the lead role in all three films of the trilogy, was involved in an altercation with a colleague, with Goth allegedly kicking a colleague in the face during filming. Another colleague also filed a complaint against her.
As the body count rises and the Night Stalker continues his spree, Maxine decides to take matters into her own hands. In a bold move, she stars in "The Puritan II", a bloody splatter film sequel within "Maxxxine".
Despite the dark themes, "Maxxxine" offers a little time travel back to the Eighties, with hits like "St. Elmo's Fire", "Self Control", and "Bette Davis Eyes" playing in the background. The film's use of only camera and effect technology from the Eighties adds to its authenticity.
As you settle in to watch "Maxxxine", be warned: the Night Stalker might just follow you home. But for fans of retro horror and the 1980s, this is a must-watch.
