Weekend closure of city on the Baltic Sea enforced with specific authorization only
Sassnitz, a picturesque town on the island of Rügen, is set to host the sailing series SailGP for the first time on August 16th and 17th, 2025, marking Germany’s debut in the series [1]. However, with the upcoming event, there will be several traffic and parking restrictions in place to ensure a smooth event experience for all.
Mooring spaces for guest vessels are severely limited, and vehicle operators without a reservation should expect not to find a mooring possibility or to be turned away upon registration [2]. To accommodate the influx of visitors, two overflow parking lots with shuttle services will be set up in Mukran on August 16th and 17th, with shuttle buses running regularly from 10 am both days to the Rügen-Platz [3].
Parking lots Dwasieden, Kistenplatz, and Berufsschule can only be used with a valid parking ticket from the SailGP event organizer from August 16th at 8 am to August 17th at approximately 7 pm [4]. Parking is prohibited on the Westhafen parking lot during the closure [5].
The city of Sassnitz will implement several road closures to manage event traffic efficiently. Merkelstraße will remain completely closed until December 31st as part of construction work [6]. The lower harbor street and the lower Straße der Jugend will be closed to vehicle traffic on August 16th and 17th from 10 am to approximately 7 pm [7]. Access to Sassnitz via federal road B96, Dorfstraße, Mukraner Straße, and state road L303 (Werder) will be restricted from 10 am to 3 pm on August 16th and 17th [8].
A special permit is required to access Sassnitz during the restrictions [9]. Exiting the city is allowed at all times during the restrictions. The street between RügenFisch and the water police will be completely closed from July 28th to August 29th [10].
For maritime traffic, no general restrictions are planned, but local excursion ships and trips with traditional ships participating in the Sailnitz Sail will remain in operation [11]. On race days, there may be brief waterway closures in the harbor entrance area, and all traffic participants are urged to navigate with caution and heed the signals of the deployed escort vessels [12].
Approaching the Sassnitz city harbor from the north-east may involve a slight detour during the activation of the exclusive zone [13]. A zone for training and racing foiling F50 catamarans will be established south-east of the Sassnitz city harbor from August 11th to 17th, marked with sea marks and only accessible by authorized vehicles [14].
For detailed and official information about traffic and parking restrictions related to the event, it is best to consult the local city authority of Sassnitz or the official SailGP event organizers closer to the event date. This information is often available on municipal websites or through event-related press releases.

That weekend in Sassnitz, spectators can delight in the thrilling sports event SailGP, which will take place from August 16th to 17th [1]. Not just sailing enthusiasts will gather there, but also sports fans in general, eager to witness Germany's debut in this series.
To accommodate the surge of sports fans, the city has planned two overflow parking lots with free shuttle services on August 16th and 17th [3]. This makes it easier for visitors to reach the central Rügen-Platz from Mukran.
