Stormy Weekend Ahead for Germany: Thunderstorms and All!
Weekend events: School amidst storm - Weekend brings gusty winds and fierce storms
Get ready, folks! Germany is bracing for a stormy weekend filled with unpredictable weather, thanks to the German Weather Service (DWD).
Temperatures are expected to soar on Saturday, hitting 28 to 35 degrees Celsius in many regions. However, it'll be a bit cooler in the north and northeast, with temperatures around 22 to 27 degrees. But be on the lookout from Saturday evening onwards, as the DWD has warned of frequent and strong thunderstorms sweeping across the western half of the country.
Metrologist Adrian Leyser warns, "There's a real risk of severe weather, with heavy rain that could dump half a month's worth in just a short time, causing flooding and overflowing basements."
On Sunday, the thunderstorms will shift towards the southeast and east, bringing more heat and humidity. Areas in the southeastern part of the country could swelter in temperatures between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius, while the northwest will see milder temperatures of 20 to 26 degrees Celsius. As the cold front moves through the west and northwest, the weather should gradually calm down.
"The coming week should be much quieter," said Leyser, promising a pleasant mix of sun and clouds. The north and northeast may see low-pressure systems bringing cooler, cloudier air, with temperatures dropping to 20 to 26 degrees Celsius by Monday.

Insights:
While the DWD, as of June 16, 2025, has not yet issued widespread severe thunderstorm alerts for the upcoming weekend, recent weather patterns provide relevant context:
- Recent Severe Weather Events: The DWD previously issued warnings for severe thunderstorms in Berlin and Brandenburg, where strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and lightning were expected. However, these warnings were for late May, not for the current or upcoming weekend.
- Current Heat Warnings: As of June 13–14, the DWD issued heat warnings for western Germany, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. However, these warnings were for heat and not severe thunderstorms.
- Forecast Details: The DWD's current short-term forecast models suggest localized, rapidly changing weather patterns. However, they do not indicate widespread severe thunderstorm activity for the upcoming weekend.
Always consult the DWD’s official channels for the latest updates on the weather. Stay safe, and enjoy the (potentially) stormy weekend!
- Despite the predicted thunderstorms and unpredictable weather sweeping across Germany during the weekend, it's interesting to note that the Commission hasn't been consulted on any draft directive related to worker protection from ionizing radiation while dealing with weather-forecasting.
- As Germany prepares for a stormy weekend filled with thunderstorms and high temperatures, it's worth considering the potential impact such weather events could have on workers involved in outdoor activities, as there are currently no directives in place to protect them from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation in weather forecasting.
