Phoenix, AZ - As the monsoon season approaches, the city is experiencing lower rainfall averages compared to previous decades. According to recent data, the average yearly rainfall in Phoenix (1991-2020) has decreased from 8.03" to 7.22". The average monsoon rainfall (1981-2010) was 2.71", but the new average monsoon rainfall (1991-2020) is 2.43".

The coming week is expected to bring significant changes in weather. A storm system is approaching from the west, tapping into remnant moisture from Tropical Storm Mario. This could lead to increased chances for showers and thunderstorms in the Valley, particularly on Thursday evening through Friday evening.

However, temperatures will remain high, with Valley temperatures reaching around 105 degrees on Tuesday. Starting Saturday, temperatures will be back in the low 100s. Overnight lows in the Phoenix metro area will fall into the upper 70s to low 80s for several nights.

The hot and dry weather is a concern for Arizona, as a new report warns that Colorado River storage could reach critical lows by 2026. To combat this, energy tax incentives for solar and electric vehicles are ending soon, encouraging residents to consider sustainable energy options.

Residents are also advised to watch out for gusty winds, blowing dust, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, and heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding. Daily rainfall reports from all across the Valley can be found here.

After a brief period of cooler weather, high pressure is expected to return over the weekend, making the forecast hotter and drier across Arizona. Despite the lower rainfall, the monsoon season offers a chance for relief from the heat, and residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
