Weather Outlook for Day One of England vs India Test at The Oval: What are the Current Rain Predictions?

The 5th Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, set to begin on July 31 at The Oval, has been shrouded in controversy and weather uncertainty.

In a surprising turn of events, tension between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Oval groundsman Lee Fortis arose due to a dispute over practice pitch conditions. Gambhir was reportedly unhappy with the practice surface, which was considered wet and unsuitable for the team's training needs. The disagreement escalated into a heated verbal exchange, with Gambhir asserting authority by telling Fortis, "You are just a groundsman." The confrontation became publicly visible and drew social media attention.

Specifically, Lee Fortis opposed India's use of the main square for practice, prompting the initial confrontation. The pitch for practice was wet and considered unsuitable by the Indian team, which triggered Gambhir’s frustration. Gambhir’s comments and strong language aimed at Fortis intensified the clash, though India’s batting coach stepped in to calm the situation.

Fortis later expressed that he felt unfairly made out to be the villain in the incident, emphasizing that the actual pitch for the Test match was one of the best in the series with a fair contest between bat and ball.

As for the weather, both Weather.com and Accuweather predict rain throughout the day. Weather.com's forecast is the least hopeful, with chances of rain around 50% in the morning, rising to over 90% consistently from roughly 11am to 2pm. According to Accuweather, there is a 61% chance of rain before 11am local time, decreasing to 49% by 10am and 24% by the scheduled start of play. However, the chances of rain are expected to increase again to 47% around 2pm and remain around 50% for the rest of the afternoon/evening.

The areas around The Oval have received heavy rain overnight, and the weather forecast for day one of the Test may impact the action. Interrupted play could be a possibility, according to the BBC Weather forecast, which predicts a 59% chance of rain at 9am, increasing to 89% by the start of play and remaining over 50% for the rest of the afternoon. Weather.com's forecast suggests that chances of rain will decrease to around 17% by 5pm.

England and India have different objectives for the series finale: England aims for a draw to win the series, while India needs a win to draw level. England announced their playing XI on Wednesday, with four changes, and captain Ben Stokes is expected to miss out due to injury. A much-changed Indian lineup is also expected, with Rishabh Pant ruled out.
