As the dog days of August approach, residents of eastern Iowa are bracing for a heatwave and the potential for severe storms.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the 70s by the end of the week, with heat index readings peaking at a scorching 105 on Tuesday. However, the cooling trend will continue into the weekend, with highs reaching into the low 90s during the day. Despite the forecast for a drop in temperatures, the heat and humidity are expected to persist until Tuesday.

In light of the extreme heat, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory today from noon to 8 pm. Forecasters recommend staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, limiting or avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day, taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas if you must be outside, wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing, checking on vulnerable people like elderly relatives, young children, and pets, never leaving children or pets unattended in cars, using local cooling centers if you lack air conditioning at home, paying attention to symptoms of heat-related illnesses, and seeking medical help if needed.

In addition to the heat, the Storm Prediction Center has placed eastern Iowa under a Level 2 out of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather. Scattered showers and severe storms may develop as a cold front moves in, with the biggest threat being soaking downpours, damaging winds, and spin-up tornadoes. No new threats of soaking downpours, damaging winds, or spin-up tornadoes have been forecasted beyond Tuesday night.

Residents are urged to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates for possible storms and be prepared for sudden changes like strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning. Seek shelter indoors during severe thunderstorms and avoid outdoor activities during storms to reduce risk. No further Heat Advisory has been issued beyond Tuesday as of now, but the severe weather risk is during the overnight hours tonight into early Tuesday morning.

It's important to remember that taking precautions is crucial to avoiding heat-related illness, especially during these extreme conditions. Stay safe and stay cool!
