Nigeria Braces for Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms, According to NiMet Forecast

Residents across various regions in Nigeria are advised to be prepared for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding, as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast for August 3, 2025.

The forecast predicts flash floods, heavy rain, and thunderstorms in specific regions of the country. In the central area, there is a chance of light rain in the morning in Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa States.

Northern States

Morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina. Afternoon and evening will see widespread thunderstorms across the entire northern region. There is a high possibility of flooding in Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi states.

Central States

Light morning rains are forecast in parts of Benue, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, and Nasarawa. In the afternoon and evening, rainfall will likely continue over Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the FCT.

Southern States

Cloudy skies with light to moderate morning rains are expected in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa. Flooding risk is particularly highlighted for Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom during this period. Light showers are anticipated over the whole southern region later in the day.

NiMet has advised residents in these high-risk areas to take precautionary measures against flooding, strong winds, and lightning, and to stay updated via official channels. To prevent being struck by falling branches or damaged trees, disconnect electrical equipment from outlets and avoid close proximity to towering trees.

The organization suggested that citizens check NiMet's website at www.nimet.gov.ng to remain up to date on weather information. NiMet will provide airline operators with airport-specific weather information (flight documentation) so they may plan their operations effectively.

Over portions of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River States in the morning, overcast skies with sporadic light rains are anticipated for the southern region. Some areas of Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States are predicted to see light rain later in the day.

There is a high chance of flooding in certain areas of Bayelsa State throughout the predicted period. There is a strong chance that sections of Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi may experience flooding.

Due to the low temperatures at night, those who are most at risk should be dressed warmly, and any loose items should be secured to prevent accidents. Tuesday's northern region will have morning thunderstorms and considerable rain in Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara States. Later in the day, NiMet predicts scattered thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in portions of Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa States.

Light rains are expected over parts of Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory in the afternoon or evening. There is a chance of sporadic light rainfall in the central region, potentially affecting areas like the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue States.

The public was advised by NiMet to avoid driving in areas where flash floods are possible and to turn on the emergency response system right away. Over the southern area, the agency predicts overcast skies with a possibility of light rain in the morning in Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.

In conclusion, NiMet's forecast for August 3, 2025, predicts widespread rain and thunderstorms across Nigeria, with a high risk of flooding in specific regions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

  • In light of the impending weather conditions, it is advisable for those in environmental-science fields to closely monitor the climate changes and prepare for any potential environmental impacts related to flooding and heavy rain.
  • Given the forecast, scientific research into the effects of weather patterns on agricultural surfaces in the central and southern states could be valuable, as these regions are at a higher risk of flooding and could benefit from studying the consequences of such events on crop growth and soil conditions.
