Eastern Iowa is currently under a heat advisory, with temperatures expected to soar and the risk of severe thunderstorms looming over the next few days.

A massive heat dome over the central and eastern United States is causing dangerous, long-duration heat, with heat alerts and advisories in place affecting the region. In particular, eastern Iowa is experiencing these conditions as part of this broader event.

Recent severe weather in the region included a derecho that passed through northern and eastern Iowa, resulting in power outages, downed trees, and property damage. Wind gusts reached up to 100 mph in northwest Iowa and gusts up to 83 mph were recorded in Cedar Rapids.

The continued threats include severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in some areas. The biggest threats if these storms develop would be damaging winds, soaking downpours, and potentially spin-up tornadoes.

Heat advisories are expected to remain in effect at least through midweek, combined with the ongoing risk for severe storms. This makes monitoring local forecasts crucial for updated conditions.

Residents are advised to stay out of the sun, stay in air-conditioning, drink plenty of fluids, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Temperatures will reach into the low 90s, with heat index readings on Tuesday potentially reaching up to 105. However, temperatures will cool off into the 70s from Wednesday through the weekend.

The Storm Prediction Center's Level 2 Slight Risk for severe weather in eastern Iowa remains in effect. The weather pattern is expected to change starting from Tuesday.

For the rest of the week and weekend, the forecast does not include a heat advisory, but the Level 2 Slight Risk for severe weather in eastern Iowa remains in place. It is important to continue to monitor local forecasts for any updates on conditions.
