Weather alerts remain active in Portugal
As the intense heatwave persists across Mainland Portugal, the Instituto de Meteorologia (IPMA) has issued a district-wise warning status update for the region.
In a high heat risk alert, the IPMA has extended the orange warning for the districts of Beja, Évora, Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 14. This warning signifies a high heat risk and urges citizens to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
Several districts, including Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Vila Real, Viseu, and Coimbra, remain under a yellow warning. This moderate heat risk alert advises citizens to be aware of the conditions and take appropriate measures to stay safe. Notably, the yellow warning for Coimbra was briefly lifted but will resume again on Saturday, August 15, until 6:00 p.m.
The IPMA forecasts a slight drop in maximum temperatures today, especially along the North and Central coasts, with a slight rise in the Algarve region. Minimum temperatures are also expected to decrease across mainland Portugal. This cooling trend is part of a broader heatwave affecting much of Southern and Western Europe, including Portugal, with daytime highs around the mid to high 30s Celsius (up to about 40 °C in some areas) during the peak period.
The wider region is experiencing an extreme Heat Dome causing very high temperatures and drought conditions. The IPMA urges everyone to stay informed, follow local authorities' guidance, and prioritise their health and safety during this prolonged heatwave.
Here's a breakdown of the current warning status by district:

The forecast shows a slight rise in temperatures in the Algarve region of Portugal, contrary to the drop expected along the North and Central coasts. Despite the slightly high temperatures, the IPMA has no active warnings for the districts in the Algarve region, suggesting a different weather condition compared to other parts of mainland Portugal where orange and yellow warnings are currently in effect.
