Weather alerts persist in Portugal
Heatwave Continues Across Portugal: Orange and Yellow Warnings in Place
A persistent heatwave is sweeping across mainland Portugal, with several weather warnings for high temperatures still in effect as of August 14, 2025. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued warnings across various districts, ranging from yellow (the lowest level) to orange (the second highest level).
Orange warnings for persistent very high maximum temperatures apply to the districts of Castelo Branco, Guarda, and Bragança until the end of Friday. Meanwhile, Évora, Beja, and Portalegre remain under an orange warning until 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by a yellow warning until the end of the day. Vila Real and Viseu have a yellow warning until 6 a.m. Thursday, changing to orange until 6 p.m. Thursday.
Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Braga, and Lisbon are under a yellow warning until the end of Thursday. Santarém, Leiria, and Coimbra have a yellow warning until 6 p.m. Friday.
Maximum temperatures are reaching as high as 42ºC in some areas during this heatwave, with typical sea temperatures along the Algarve around 23-24ºC. However, the detailed minimum and maximum temperatures by district for today are not explicitly listed in the search results.
The mainland remains under heightened rural fire danger due to these conditions, with government decrees imposing restrictions on activities that might provoke fires.
The IPMA has forecast a slight rise in the Algarve's maximum temperatures today, while minimum temperatures are expected to drop. On the North and Central coasts, a slight drop in maximum temperatures is predicted.
The yellow warning is still in effect in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, and Beja. The IPMA has extended the yellow warning until 6 p.m. on Saturday in these districts.
The district of Coimbra is no longer under the yellow warning. However, the IPMA has issued an orange warning for maximum temperatures in four districts in the North and Centre interior, valid until 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Portugal has been on alert for fires since Sunday and continues to this day. For the latest and detailed forecasts, including exact maximum and minimum temperatures by district, IPMA’s official meteorological website provides real-time data and updates. Stay safe and stay cool!
