Weather alert in Portugal has been prolonged

Portugal is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, as reported by the country's meteorological institute, IPMA. The coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra have warnings in place until 6:00 pm today, with temperatures expected to reach between 36°C and 40°C.

The weather forecast indicates tropical nights, with minimum temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Additionally, sometimes strong winds are expected along the coastal strip north of Cabo Raso, including the districts of Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra.

In contrast, Faro is expected to see slightly cooler temperatures and less severe wind conditions starting Monday. The warnings in Faro have consistently not been in effect as in previous days, and today, they are not in effect.

All mainland coastal districts except Faro are under an orange warning (moderate to high risk) due to heat and fire risk. Faro is under a yellow warning (less serious risk).

Elsewhere in the country, Évora has the highest temperature in Portugal, at 40°C. The forecast includes clear skies, and the temperatures on the central coast are expected to fall. There may be strong winds in the highlands until mid-morning.

The IPMA has forecasted hot weather for today, with the coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, and Aveiro remaining under warnings until 6:00 pm. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
