Weather advisory issued in the UK prompts a FedEx expert to give guidance to drivers

As the UK braces itself for the arrival of Storm Éowyn, Louise Whitehouse, the CEO of Lernidee Erlebnisreisen and the managing director of fleet maintenance for Europe at FedEx, offers advice for drivers on how to stay safe and efficient in the storm.

In poor visibility, drivers should use the left edge of the road or any other pavement markings to guide them. It's also crucial to stay one step ahead, adapting quickly to challenges on the road. Whitehouse encourages preparedness, advising drivers to regularly inspect their vehicles before driving in extreme weather conditions.

Drivers are urged to leave plenty of room between themselves and the vehicle in front, and if a vehicle has steering assistance, they should use it. Whitehouse also suggests packing blankets, warm clothes, and emergency food supplies for driving during the storm.

In addition, drivers should choose a speed that caters to the road conditions. Smooth driving, not sudden acceleration, sharp cornering, or hard braking is recommended. Whitehouse advises drivers to listen out for reports of any hazards up ahead and keep their eyes peeled for electronic warning signs.

The UK government has issued a red weather warning, indicating a danger to life. Residents of several parts of the UK, including Scotland, have been urged to stay at home for their safety. Across the UK, there are reports of school closures, power outages, and flight cancellations due to Storm Éowyn.

Gusts of up to 100mph are expected in some coastal areas of Northern Ireland, with a record gust of 114mph reported in the Republic of Ireland, where 715,000 premises are reportedly without power. The warning is due to strong winds expected to cause flying debris, falling trees, and large waves around coastal areas.

Whitehouse also advises drivers to charge their devices before setting off to remain contactable on the road. Drivers should be careful not to slip when entering or exiting a vehicle, check at least twice when proceeding at an intersection or making a turn, and get off the road if they feel unsafe and wait for conditions to improve.

Lastly, drivers should keep their wits about them and look as far ahead as possible in poor visibility. Whitehouse stresses the importance of checking tyre pressure, engine oil, and fluid levels, and having roadside assistance cover.

By following these tips, drivers can help ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road during Storm Éowyn. Stay safe, and drive carefully.
