Weather advisory in Portugal prolonged
The coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra have weather warnings that will last until 6:00 pm today, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). These are the only areas experiencing warnings today.
Currently, these districts have no active weather warnings or only yellow warnings related to heat. Lisbon and Leiria coastal districts will have no warnings starting from 6 pm today, while Aveiro and Coimbra are under yellow warnings due to persistent high maximum temperatures, but no orange or red warnings.
As for the weather forecast for these districts, along with Faro and Évora, temperatures remain high but a slight drop is expected. Yellow warnings apply mainly to Aveiro and Coimbra due to continued heat, which is the least severe level. Faro, on the other hand, has no warnings at present.
Évora, however, is forecasted to reach higher temperatures, around 41ºC, and remains under a yellow warning. The coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra, despite having warnings, are expected to experience falling temperatures on the central coast.
Meanwhile, strong winds are expected in the highlands until mid-morning. Aveiro and Sines have the lowest temperatures, with a temperature of 29°C, while Évora is the hottest area in the country.
The extreme heatwave affecting Portugal continues mainly in the northern inland districts where red and orange warnings prevail. However, along the coastlines and southern regions such as Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Faro, warnings are lighter or absent. This heatwave could make August the hottest in 15-20 years, with temperatures potentially rising again after August 10 due to a strong anticyclone.
Faro is an exception in terms of warnings, as it is not under any today. The IPMA forecasts hot weather with clear skies for today.
Weather-forecasting by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) indicates that Aveiro and Coimbra have yellow warnings due to persistent high maximum temperatures, while Lisbon and Leiria coastal districts will no longer have any warnings starting from 6 pm today. Despite the weather warnings, the coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra are expected to experience falling temperatures on the central coast in the coming hours.
