Weather advisory extended in Portugal
Portugal Weather Update: August 5, 2025
Portugal is experiencing a heatwave, according to the latest IPMA forecast. The coastal districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra have warnings in place until 6:00 pm today, with temperatures generally ranging from 28°C to 36°C.
In contrast, Faro and other southern Algarve coastal areas will see a decrease in maximum temperatures starting on Monday, with temperatures between 21°C and 30°C from Wednesday onward. This offers some relief from the peak heat.
Strong winds are expected in the highlands until mid-morning. However, specific wind details are not available for the coastal districts mentioned above.
The central coast will experience falling temperatures, according to the forecast. The weather in Sines is not specified beyond its current temperature of 29°C, which is the same as Aveiro and Sines, the lowest temperatures in the country today.
Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, and Aveiro do not have specific weather details in the current forecast. Évora, on the other hand, is the hottest area in the country today, with temperatures reaching 40°C.
The IPMA has issued an orange warning (second highest level) for nearly all mainland districts due to this ongoing hot weather episode, except for Faro, which remains under a yellow warning. This indicates a moderate to high meteorological risk mainly linked to heat and fire risk.
Fire risk warnings are significant. While most municipalities in Coimbra district are on maximum fire risk alert, many coastal municipalities in Lisbon, Aveiro, and Leiria districts have moderate fire risk. For Faro district, municipalities including Monchique, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, and Tavira are at maximum fire risk.
"Tropical nights" with temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are expected through Tuesday in most of the territory, reducing somewhat from Wednesday onward, being more restricted to interior regions.
In summary, coastal districts near Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra face high temperatures up to mid-30s °C with moderate fire risk, while Faro has somewhat lower coastal temperatures but maximal fire risk in several municipalities. The IPMA emphasizes caution due to extreme heat and fire danger conditions continuing this week.
