Tracking the Titans: A Record-Breaking Spectacle at the BIIF Championships
Track and field fans were treated to a thrilling display of talent and resilience at last weekend's Central Pacific Bank/Big Island Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships, where records tumbled and the state meet at Waverider Stadium is now shaping up to be an unmissable event.
The championships saw a standout performance from Hawaii Preparatory Academy senior Elaina Head, who claimed victory in the girls high jump, discus throw, and triple jump, setting new personal records and breaking the BIIF stadium record in the high jump. Head's staggering leap of 1.70 meters earned her the fifth-highest ranking in the country and notched her a total of 22 event wins in 2025, making her a hot favorite for the state meet.
Konawaena speedster Violet Schaut left spectators stunned after winning three individual races – the girls 100-meter, 200-meter, and the 400-meter – with her exceptional time in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.98 seconds and setting a new stadium record. Schaut also played a crucial role in the girls 4×400-meter relay, where she joined forces with Jazmin Fillmore, Kaylen Hoag, and Dasha Kala, to post a season-best time of 4:03.18.
Fillmore impressed in her field events, recording personal-best times in the girls 100-meter hurdles (15.44s) and 300-meter hurdles (45.19 seconds), as well as winning both races. Additionally, Fillmore, Schaut, Kala, and Kaella Masters combined to win the 4×100 relay, setting a blistering time of 48.91 seconds.
The Wildcats boys relay team caused quite a stir, with Aden Sokham, Kareem Walker, Aiden Akina, and Paxton Sokham combining to win the 4×400 with a season-best time of 3:27.12. Their performance earned them the sixth-fastest time in the state.
Kamehameha-Hawaii's Judah Kanoa continued his impressive hurdles dominance, taking home two individual wins in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. Kanoa's time in the 300-meter hurdles was the sixth-fastest in the state, and a new personal record for the sophomore, who has won 17 hurdles races so far in 2025.
Laupahoehoe junior Tazein Sykes celebrated personal records in the boys 200 (22.30s) and 400-meter dashes (49.98), which both earned top-10 rankings in Hawaii. Sykes has claimed victory in seven individual races this season.
Hilo long-distance runner Kekaihulali Halpern recorded a personal-best time of 2:14.97 in the girls 800-meter run, good enough for second-best in the state, while also winning the 1,500 with a time of 4:49.00. In her final season as a Vik Queen, Halpern has already secured nine individual race victories.
Waiakea junior Shane Tominaga added another pair of victories to his collection, winning the 800 and 1,500 in the boys field. Tominaga set personal records in both races, finishing the 800 in 2:00.09 and the 1,500 in 9:31.47, ensuring top-20 rankings in the state.
Elisa Childers of Kealakehe dominated the longest race of the day, the girls 3,000-meter run, and finished in a personal-best time of 10:39.75. Her time was recorded as the fourth-fastest in the state, and she has claimed victory in the 3,000 seven times this season.
HPA's Phillip Gerstengarbe registered a personal record in the boys 3,000-meter race, finishing in 9:31.43, while Kona senior Hiwa Satta-Ellis launched a personal-best throw of 15.41 meters (50-06.50) in the boys shot put, securing his victory in the event.
St. Joseph's Analei Weidemeier posted the second-farthest shot put attempt in the state in her win, with a launch of 11.54 meters (37-10.50). The freshman has enjoyed four victories in her debut season, while her elder brother, Amari Weidemeier, notched a win in the boys triple jump with a leap of 12.58 meters (41-03.25).
Satta-Ellis's teammate, senior Elias Malapit, threw the farthest discus in the state, with a personal-best launch of 53.14 meters (174-04), to secure his sixth win in 2025.
KSH junior Taliya Nishida set a new personal best in the girls pole vault, launching 2.90 meters (9-06.00), while her teammate, junior Kaimanamaikalani Bowman, achieved a personal-record vault in the boys competition, ending with a maximum leap of 4.29 meters (14-01.00).
