Waverider Stadium hosts season-ending track and field meet for BIIF athletes

🌴 KAINA-KONA - The Central Pacific Bank/Big Island Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships left spectators on the edge of their seats as records tumbled, teasing an exhilarating State Meet at Waverider Stadium this weekend!

Senior standout Elaina Head, from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, stole the show on Saturday with impressive victories in the high jump (1.70m), discus throw (102-00ft), and triple jump (36-06.50ft). Breaking a BIIF stadium record in the high jump and achieving the fifth-highest leap in the United States, Head added another feather to her cap, winning a BIIF-leading 22 events in 2025, making her a strong contender for the state meet.

Violet Schaut, a lightning-quick Konawaena senior, ruled her races as well, winning the 100-meter (11.98s), 200-meter (25.24s), and 400-meter (56.53s) events. The 100-meter dash time also set a new stadium record! Together with teammates Jazmin Fillmore, Kaylen Hoag, and Dasha Kala, Schaut claimed victory in the girls 4×400-meter relay (4:03.18).

Fillmore, who shone both on the track and in her field events, clocked a personal-best time of 15.44s in the girls 100-meter hurdles prelims and won the final with 15.60s. She went on to win the 300-meter hurdles in 45.19s and helped her team take home the girls 4×100 (48.91s).

The Wildcats boys relay team, featuring Aden Sokham, Kareem Walker, Aiden Akina, and Paxton Sokham, captured the 4×400 (3:27.12) for a memorable performance.

Kamehameha-Hawaii's Judah Kanoa, a seasoned hurdler, clinched victories in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.05s) and 300-meter hurdles (40.47), setting the sixth-fastest time in the 300-meter event and achieving a personal record. A sophomore powerhouse, Kanoa has won 17 hurdles races in 2025.

Laupahoehoe junior Tazein Sykes earned personal records in the boys 200 (22.30s) and 400-meter dashes (49.98), with both times ranking in the top 10 in Hawaii. Sykes boasts seven individual race victories in the season so far.

Long-distance phenom Kekaihulali Halpern, a senior at Hilo, clocked a personal-best time of 2:14.97 in the girls 800-meter run, securing the second-best time in the state. Halpern's 1,500 victory came with a time of 4:49.00, adding another nine individual race wins to her impressive 2025 track record.

In the boys field, Waiakea junior Shane Tominaga won both the 800 (2:00.09) and 1,500 (9:31.47) while setting personal records and ranking in the top 20 in Hawaii.

Elisa Childers, a Kealakehe senior, won the longest race of the day, the girls 3,000-meter run, in a personal-best time of 10:39.75 - the fourth-fastest time in the state. Dominating the race throughout the season, Childers has secured seven victories.

Philip Gerstengarbe, a senior at HPA, achieved a personal record in the boys 3,000-meter race (9:31.43), ranking 18th in Hawaii.

Hiwa Satta-Ellis, a Kona senior, launched a personal-best shot put throw of 50-06.50ft (15.41m) to take the event, ranking eighth in the state. Meanwhile, St. Joseph's Analei Weidemeier put down the second-farthest shot put attempt in Hawaii (37-10.50ft, 11.54m) in her victory. Instant stars, Analei and her brother Amari Weidemeier, the elder brother who won the boys triple jump (41-03.25ft, 12.58m), have each enjoyed four and six individual race victories, respectively, in their debut and sophomore seasons.

Senior Elias Malapit of HPA won the discus throw with a staggering personal-best toss of 174-04ft (53.14m), a feat that placed him at the top in the state.

St. Joseph's Taliya Nishida put down a personal-best pole vault of 9-06.00ft (2.90m), ranking 16th in the Hawaiian Islands. Her teammate, junior Kaimanamaikalani Bowman, soared to a personal-record vault of 14-01.00ft (4.29m), placing third in Hawaii.

At the championships, Shane Tominaga, a Waiakea junior, not only won the 800 and 1,500 meter races, but also set personal records and ranked in the top 20 in Hawaii.

Analei Weidemeier, a senior at St. Joseph's, launched a personal-best shot put throw of 37-10.50ft, the second-farthest in Hawaii, on her way to victory in the event. Meanwhile, her brother Amari, a sophomore, won the boys triple jump event.
