Waverider Stadium concludes Island's track and field season for BIIF competition
A Record-Breaking Weekend at the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships
Get ready for some incredible athletic action at Waverider Stadium this weekend, as the state meet kicks off! Last weekend, the Central Pacific Bank/Big Island Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships saw records being shattered, promising a thrilling competition.
One of the standout performers was Hawai`i Preparatory Academy senior Elaina Head, who dominated the field events. Head triumphed in the high jump (1.70 meters), discus throw (102-00 feet), and triple jump (36-06.50 feet), notching personal records in all three events. Her high jump leap snatched the BIIF stadium record, making it the fifth-highest in Hawaii and the 90th-best in the country.
Another phenomenal athlete hailing from Konawaena is Violet Schaut. This speedster won an impressive three individual races - the girls 100-meter (11.98 seconds), 200-meter (25.24 seconds), and the 400-meter (56.53 seconds). Schaut also slammed a stadium-record time in the 100-meter dash and was part of the winning girls 4×400-meter relay team.
Junior long-distance phenom Kekaihulali Halpern of Hilo set a personal-best time of 2:14.97 in the girls 800-meter run, securing the second-best time in Hawaii. She additionally won the 1,500 with a time of 4:49.00. In the boys' races, Shane Tominaga, a junior from Waiakea, won the 800 and 1,500-meter events, setting personal records in both races.
Elisa Childers of Kealakehe won the longest race of the day in the girls field, completing the 3,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 10:39.75. This time was the fourth-fastest in the state, while Philip Gerstengarbe of HPA set a personal record in the boys 3,000-meter race.
The boys relay team from Kamehameha-Hawaii made heads turn with their winning time of 3:27.12 in the 4×400, which was the sixth-fastest in the state. The Wildcats boys relay team also achieved a season-best time in the 4×400.
Several athletes notched personal records during the event, such as Konawaena’s Jazmin Fillmore, Tazein Sykes from Laupahoehoe, and KSH junior Taliya Nishida in the pole vault.
