Water restoration in Sandakan: Phases for resuming water delivery

In a relief for the residents of Kampung Sim-Sim, the Segaliud Large Raw Water (LRA) resumed its operations last night at around 9pm. This comes after five days without water supply due to a disruption caused by a landslide that affected the 275kV Kolopis-Segaliud transmission line.

According to the Sabah water department (JANS), two out of three pumps are now operational, and the current output capacity of the Segaliud LRA is estimated at 130 million litres per day. However, the water supply capacity is still lower than its normal capacity of 140 million litres per day.

Residents in Kampung Sim-Sim began receiving water supply from 2pm today, as their area was prioritised due to the prolonged water outage. Over the past three days, a team of volunteers, known as the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat (Fire and Rescue Department), had been delivering water supply using water tankers to affected areas like Sungai Sibuga and Taman Sejati Utama.

Sandakan MP Vivian Wong confirmed that the Segaliud LRA has been operating with a generator for several days. She also expressed concern about the stability of the water pipeline, as many of the pipes are old and there is a risk of bursting due to unstable water pressure.

In an effort to stabilise and increase the water level at the Pengimbang reservoir in Kebun Cina, the Sandakan water department is working tirelessly. Residents are advised to use water prudently over the next few days until the water supply is fully restored.

JANS announced that water supply will be prioritised for areas that have been without water for five days. The repair work on the 275kV Kolopis-Segaliud transmission line has been completed, ensuring a stable electricity supply for the Segaliud LRA.

As the water supply situation improves, the community's collective efforts in conserving water will play a crucial role in ensuring a swift return to normalcy. The residents of Kampung Sim-Sim and other affected areas can now breathe a sigh of relief as they welcome the return of their much-needed water supply.
