Soaring DLRG Water Rescuers: Thuringia Sees 485 Active Members in 2024! 🏊♂️💦
Water rescue force boosted by 2024 additional members in preparations for future emergencies - Water Rescue: 2024 Additional Active Members Join DLRG for Water Rescuing Operations
Hey there! Guess what? More heroes are diving headfirst into action with the German Life-Saving Association (DLRG), and it's happening right here in Thuringia. Last year, the number of individuals saving lives in the water jumped from 382 to a whopping 485 – that's quite a splash! 🤺
This revelation comes straight from the organization's annual balance sheet. The DLRG's membership in Thuringia has swelled by 6.9%, reaching a grand total of 3,431 members. 🤝
But there’s a surprising lag in swimming training—the very heart of their mission. Instead of the 304 members offering swimming badges in 2023, we saw only 272 active participants last year. Now, why is that, you ask? René Rimbach, the leader of Thuringia's state association, shares some insights.
Seems like students in college towns like Jena and Erfurt play a significant role here. When they graduate and leave the area, they often say their final farewell to the DLRG. Now, wouldn't it be something if they could find a way to keep this talented bunch around? On top of that, according to Rimbach, the sheer demand for swimming courses can sometimes lead Certified Lifeguards™ to burn themselves out, requiring a breather.
The DLRG didn't report any life-saving incidents in Thuringia last year. Across Germany, though, their assistance saved 1,446 lives in 2024. 🕊️
But don't fret! Last year, the DLRG in Thuringia hopped to the aid of others 310 times, offering essential first aid! That’s approximately the same number as the previous year.
The DLRG doesn't stop working when the day is done! As Rimbach explains, these brave souls are shining stars at city festivals, major sporting events—even triathlons. They’re more like water-loving superheroes! 🦸♀️💧
The DLRG is the powerhouse of private water rescues across Germany, with an impressive headcount of over 627,150 members nationwide. 🌟

As the DLRG Thuringia continues to grow, with a record 485 active members in 2024, there seems to be a gap in swimming training programs. This is attributed to college students in cities like Erfurt who often leave the area upon graduation, and overworked Certified Lifeguards™ needing a break. In addition to water rescues, the DLRG members are also present at city festivals, major sporting events, and triathlons, demonstrating their dedication to public safety.
