Controversial Promotion in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Interior Ministry Under Investigation
The Interior Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Christian Pegel (SPD), is facing scrutiny following a controversial promotion of a senior official in the ministry. The promoted official is currently under investigation for allegations of asset mismanagement, according to reports.
The opposition, led by the Left Party's interior policy spokesman, Michael Noetzel, sees no scandal in the situation. Noetzel emphasizes that suspicion in a rule of law is not a conviction, and that there is no evidence of a manufactured scandal by the opposition. He also commends Pegel for showing unconditional transparency by providing detailed reports and answering all questions.
However, the Green faction chairwoman, Constanze Oehlrich, considers the accusations to be serious. She has been critical of frequent errors in the awarding of top positions in the state administration and believes that if it is true that the state lost around 430,000 euros due to lapsed accounting towards counties, this cannot go unpunished.
The state auditor has repeatedly pointed out these errors, according to Oehlrich. The AfD faction chairman, Nikolaus Kramer, accuses the interior minister of misconduct and hair-raising carelessness in promotion and application practices. He, along with the AfD, has called for Pegel's resignation and that of his state secretary, Wolfgang Schmuellling (SPD).
The searches, which took place in the Interior Ministry and the State Office for Central Tasks and Technology of the Police, Fire, and Disaster Control Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, are related to possible offenses in the procurement and distribution of protective equipment during the corona pandemic. The relevant official has waived his controversial promotion, but the investigating authorities are now in charge, according to Noetzel.
The opposition's doubts about the conditions in the Interior Ministry remain unaddressed. The CDU spokesman, Sebastian Ehlers, stated that political proximity and party loyalty were prioritized over competence and performance in the promotion process.
Despite the ongoing criminal investigations, Pegel could not explain the assessment and urgency of the controversial promotion. The mask affair's accusations are a blow to the minister's reputation, and it remains to be seen how the investigations will unfold.
