In the heart of the Sahara, a tale of intrigue unfolds in the highly anticipated film, 'Sirat'. Directed by Oliver Laxe, this complex and captivating thriller has been making waves in the film industry.
'Sirat' tells the story of a father and his son who embark on a journey to a remote rave in the mountains of southern Morocco, in search of their daughter and sister who has been missing for months at one of these parties.
The film, starring Sergi López and Bruno Nuñez Arjona, premiered in Spain on June 6 and has since grossed over 2.5 million euros domestically. It recently premiered in France and has exceeded its attendance in Spain by 80%, grossing over one million euros in less than a week.
'Sirat' has been well received by critics and competed for the Palme d'Or at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, although it did not take home the prestigious award. Instead, it won the Jury Prize.
The film is nominated in the category of Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards. It has beaten 'Sorda' and 'Romería' to become the Spanish candidate for the Oscars.
Despite the nomination, Oliver Laxe has stated that 'Sirat' is not an Oscar film. The distributor of 'Sirat' is The Match Factory, with the film set to be available for streaming on the RTVE Play platform from September 19. It is yet to be announced when it will be available for streaming on Movistar Plus.
'Sirat' has already beaten the Spanish candidacy of last year, 'Second Prize', which fell short at the Academy Awards. With its eyes set on December, 'Sirat' embarks on its journey to the Oscars, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience.
