Breaking: US Proposes Remodeled Nuclear Deal to Iran Amid Growing Tensions

Washington plans to offer Tehran a nuclear agreement

In a striking turn of events, the US has put forward a fresh proposal for a nuclear accord with Iran, according to government sources. The statement comes as tension between the two nations escalates, with Iran's uranium stockpile approaching weapon-grade levels, raising concerns globally, particularly in Israel.

Steve Biegun, the US special envoy for Iran, has reportedly acquainted Iran's leadership with a revised agreement. The proposal, termed "detailed and acceptable" by US spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, was disclosed to various media outlets, including Axios. In response, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi confirmed receiving "elements of a US deal" through Oman. Iran will reportedly reply in accordance with its national interests, Araghtschi added on Twitter.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran's uranium backlog reached almost 409 kilograms with a purity level of 60 percent, a considerable increase in a short span. Approximately 42 kilograms of this uranium, if enriched to 90 percent, would suffice for a nuclear weapon. This alarming development has sparked unrest in global circles, particularly in Israel.

Politicians in Israel fear that Iran's leadership is determined to erect an atomic bomb, posing an existential threat to the Jewish state. Rumors suggest that Israel may be planning a preemptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. The Iranian government, in response, accused Israel of forging documents and distributing them to the IAEA, which led to the report.

The US-Iranian nuclear deal has been a contentious issue for years, with disagreements oscillating around various facets, such as uranium enrichment, the recognition of Iran's enrichment rights, and sanctions relief. The Middle East remains on edge as negotiations continue.

Insights:

  • The proposed agreement includes: i) establishment of a regional consortium for uranium enrichment, ii) US recognition of Iran's enrichment rights with the suspension of current activities, iii) phased sanctions removal in exchange for Iranian concessions, and iv) immediate sanctions removal being a demand of Iran.
  • The US proposal is viewed with skepticism by Iran due to its failure to address Iran's core demands, i.e., continuing enrichment within its homeland and a clear lifting of sanctions plan.
