Washington is being reminded of the reasons why serving as Attorney General under President Trump is considered the least desirable job in the District.

In a recent development, the Trump administration has announced its intention to target liberal groups that it alleges are financing and encouraging incitement against conservatives. This move has sparked controversy, with some claiming it could infringe upon freedom of speech.

One of the key figures in this controversy is Pam Bondi, who, as the Attorney General, has promised a crackdown on hate speech. However, her approach has raised concerns, with some arguing it contradicts settled Supreme Court rulings and undermines conservative ideology.

Bondi's stance on hate speech has been met with criticism, particularly in light of her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein matter. In August 2021, she regained control over the police in the Washington, D.C. area after Trump issued a decree that placed the police under her authority, following criticism related to her handling of the Epstein scandal.

Bondi's promise of massive disclosures of Epstein's files and her claim that she had his client list on her desk gave the scandal new momentum. However, when she and FBI Director Kash Patel later stated that no Epstein client list existed and no further disclosures were warranted, they sent conspiracy theories into overdrive and created a political firestorm.

Bondi spent Tuesday backtracking after threatening Monday to crack down on people deemed guilty of hate speech. Her zeal to go after hate speech flouted the policy of the Trump administration itself, which hours after swearing to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, signed an executive order on restoring freedom of speech and ending federal censorship.

Serving as attorney general for a president as capricious as Trump will always be taxing. Both Sessions and Barr, previous attorneys general for Trump, faced difficulties in balancing their roles with the president's demands and ultimately prioritized the law and their personal integrity.

Trump's state visit in London was met with protesters projecting images of him on the exterior walls of Windsor Castle. Despite this, Trump berated ABC journalist Jonathan Karl for suggesting that hate speech is free speech, in a flagrant demonstration of a powerful politician threatening the freedom of the press.

Bondi's actions over suppressing free speech are showing yet again that serving as Donald Trump's attorney general is an impossible job. Her political touch is her Achilles' heel, as shown by her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein matter and her promise of a crackdown on hate speech, which some argue is clearly unconstitutional.
