Washington D.C.'s Washington Wizards hand out backpacks to 700 pupils in Alexandria
The Washington Wizards, in collaboration with the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, recently held a back-to-school event at William Ramsay Elementary School located at 5700 Sanger Avenue. The event, which took place on Aug. 15, 2025, was an extraordinary occasion, according to Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt.
Last year, the event was held at the William Ramsay Recreation Center, as evidenced by a photo gallery, and was attended by Wizards forward Anthony Gill. The 2025 event saw Wizards players Anthony Gill, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Jamir Watkins, along with G-Wiz and the Wizards Dancers, giving away 700 backpacks to students.
In addition to the backpacks, students also received free manicures, food, and giveaways. Principal Nefertiti Hunter-Holbeck emphasized that the event communicates to children that they matter and that the community cares about their education.
Hunter-Holbeck further stated that the event continues the inspiration for children to move forward and go after their dreams and goals. She described the event as an amazing start for the school year. Kay-Wyatt added that the event was about more than just backpacks; it was about the community showing they value education.
The official opening of William Ramsay Elementary School is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2025. The event, organised by the Wizards, is a testament to their commitment towards supporting local education and nurturing the dreams of young students.
