Bielefeld Knife Attack: Latest on the Syrian Suspect and Terror Charges
Bielefeld stabs suspect: New judge order for arrest of possible assailant - Warrant Issued for Alleged Knife Assailants in Bielefeld Attack
In the aftermath of the horrific knife attack in downtown Bielefeld, the local authorities have been working diligently to bring the perpetrator to justice. Mahmoud M., a 35-year-old migrant from Syria, is believed to be the prime suspect in this heinous crime.
Just days after the attack, Mahmoud M. was apprehended near Düsseldorf. The arrest warrant, initially issued by the Bielefeld District Court, was swiftly followed by a broader investigation led by the Federal Prosecutor's Office. The shift in responsibility came due to suspicions that the attack was religion-motivated and aimed at undermining the liberal democratic order.
It has now been revealed that Mahmoud M. may have had ties with the Islamic State (IS) militant group prior to the attack. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has provided further details about the charges, alleging that Mahmoud M. joined the IS in Syria as early as December 2014. In Syria, he reportedly served as a guard and border post for the organization until the spring of 2016. Upon entering Germany, he is said to have decided to launch a deadly spree in the name of a so-called holy war for the IS.
The investigating judge from the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe ordered the continuation of Mahmoud M.'s detention. The Federal Prosecutor's Office suspects him of membership in a foreign terroristic organization, attempted murder, and causing dangerous bodily harm.
A word of warning from General Federal Prosecutor Jens Rommel: the IS continues to pose a threat, even in Germany, and there is an ongoing danger from radicalized lone wolves who may not necessarily be linked to any specific violent group.
