Warns Against Sending Signals to "Every Evil Character Worldwide" (Altered version)

In a firm stance against Russian aggression, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a prominent European politician, and other like-minded individuals have called for a resolute approach towards Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Strack-Zimmermann insists that Russia must withdraw from Ukraine and that Europe must maintain and increase pressure on Russia through military and economic support for Ukraine.

Strack-Zimmermann's comments come in response to recent US-Russia talks, where she criticised the warm reception of Putin by the White House as a "compass malfunction," expressing concern that such gestures may undermine Ukraine's position and reward aggression. She further highlights Europe's current lack of military strength, stating that this weakness causes Europe to be sidelined in negotiations, leaving it as a mere "Zaungast" (onlooker) to events dominated by Russia and the US.

Wolfgang Ischinger, another European voice, describes the recent summit between the US and Russia as a win for Putin, with no new sanctions against Russia and no tangible benefits for Ukraine, leaving Europe dispirited. There is also awareness of internal divisions within Europe, with some countries showing less commitment to Ukraine’s defence and a potential political shift towards parties more favourable to Russia in the future, which adds complexity to the European approach.

Anton Hofreiter, chairman of the Bundestag's European Affairs Committee, has demanded an increase in humanitarian, financial, and military support for Ukraine, regardless of the meeting in Alaska. Hofreiter also stated that it is in Germany's security interest that Ukraine does not lose the war against Russia. Jürgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has stated that there should be no territorial negotiations against Ukraine, no negotiations on European security without Europeans, and comprehensive peace negotiations should not be a cover for Russian aggression.

Strack-Zimmermann compared the current situation to the years before World War II and the policy of appeasement pursued by British Prime Minister Arthur Neville Chamberlain towards Nazi Germany. She stated that what Europe needs is a leader as clear as Winston Churchill, not one like Chamberlain who failed to recognize that peaceful politics cannot be made with an aggressor. However, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and the chairman of the Bundestag's European Affairs Committee have not made similar comparisons or indicated any intention to make concessions to Russia in the current situation.

In summary, European politicians are taking a hardline stance against appeasing Putin, stressing persistent support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. They call for unity and strength within Europe to consolidate military and economic power, be taken seriously, and support Ukraine effectively. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine serves as a reminder of the importance of a united and strong Europe in maintaining peace and security in the region.
