Warnings issued by NATO to German Eurofighters stationed in Romania

The German Air Force has deployed five Eurofighter jets to Romania as part of the "NATO mission enhanced Air Policing South". This deployment, which began this month, is scheduled to last until March 2026, and is staffed by approximately 170 soldiers.

The mission aims to support the defense and security of NATO partners facing threats near the eastern NATO border, particularly Ukraine, due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. The German Air Force's participation is part of a rotation of support from several NATO countries for this mission.

Recently, there was an incident overnight on Wednesday, when Russian air strikes occurred near the Ukrainian border region close to Romania. In response, NATO scrambled two German Eurofighter jets. Despite the approaching Russian weapons systems, the Romanian airspace was not violated during the incident.

The Eurofighter jets took off from the Romanian military airbase Mihail Kogălniceanu near Constanța. After their mission, they landed safely without incident. This was the first alert takeoff of the new Eurofighter deployment.

It's important to note that the German Air Force's deployment is not specifically in response to the previous air activity near the Ukrainian border. Rather, it is part of the German Armed Forces' ongoing commitment to NATO's armed protective flights for its southeastern flank.

The German Air Force is currently supporting Ukraine as the NATO partner in this mission. This deployment is intended to help NATO partners provide military capabilities they lack on their own. The German Air Force's Eurofighter aircraft are ready for takeoff around the clock as part of an alert squadron.

The German Armed Forces spokesman confirmed that this deployment is not a direct response to any specific event, but rather a demonstration of Germany's commitment to NATO and its partners' security.
