Ulm Minster's Tower Survives a Lightning Strike with Few Damages

Cautious clearance declared by Ulm Minster following lightning strike incident - Warning Issued by Ulmer Münster Following Lightning Strike: Exercise Caution

Let's dive into the latest buzz about the iconic Ulm Minster in Germany! Over the weekend, a lightning bolt struck its imposing tower, but fear not—the Minster's building office and workshop have managed to lift the storm warning with minimal damage.

"We've been pretty lucky this time around," said Minster master builder Heidi Vormann with a sigh of relief. The striking event caused some minor issues, such as an electrical hiccup with the turnstile at the tower entrance and a fried computer. Vormann jokingly attributed their good fortune to a couple of guardian angels that must have been watching over the Minster.

Now, the team will spend the coming days testing and assessing each affected system to determine if any damage occurred or if it was merely a protective response from the Minster's protective measures. As of now, there's no sign of any stone damage.

Lightning strikes on the Ulm Minster's tower are nothing new, considering it stands tall at 161.53 meters, making it the world's tallest church tower. Vormann confirmed, "When a whopper of a storm sweeps through Ulm, you can bet your boots that the Minster's going to get bashed by a bit of lightning." This is why an extensive lightning protection system is in place to ensure the Minster stands tall and resilient, as it did this weekend.

Speaking of stone-and-steel structures, the Ulm Minster dates back to 1377. Its architectural beauty boasts the late Gothic style, with its pointed forms soaring skyward. Incredibly, an air raid in 1944 failed to leave significant damage, leaving the Minster mostly unscathed.

Dust off those history books though, as Ulm Minster will soon lose its crown as the world's tallest church tower once the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, reaches a beyond-the- clouds height of around ten meters more.
