Warmer weather awakens snakes in Krasnodar Krai—here's how to stay safe

Warmer weather in Krasnodar Krai has brought snakes out of hibernation. Residents are being reminded to stay alert when exploring the outdoors. While snake encounters are common, serious incidents remain rare if basic precautions are followed. The Kuban region is home to several snake species, including the grass snake and the Caspian whipsnake. The only venomous species, the steppe viper, thrives in open, sunlit areas like meadows, roadsides, and rocky slopes. Though widespread, it avoids high-altitude zones.

Snakes usually keep their distance from humans and only bite when threatened—often when accidentally stepped on or handled. A bite causes sharp pain, rapid swelling, and sometimes weakness or drowsiness. Children and older adults face the greatest risk of severe reactions. If bitten, the victim should lie down, drink water, and receive medical attention at once. Experts warn against tourniquets, cutting the wound, or trying to suck out venom. To reduce risk, people should watch their step and avoid reaching into tall grass, bushes, or rock piles. Despite concerns, no confirmed steppe viper bites have been recorded in Krasnodar Krai in the past five years. Most animal bite cases in 2024 involved dogs, with no specific reports of viper incidents.

Snake encounters in the region are likely to rise as temperatures climb. Simple precautions—like staying on clear paths and leaving snakes undisturbed—can prevent bites. Authorities continue to monitor the situation but stress that serious incidents remain uncommon.
