In a somber yet pointed tone, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered his gratitude to the "Americans, Britons, French, and all those who fought alongside them against the national socialist terror." He also recognized the integral role of the Red Army, comprising "Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and all who fought in it," in the liberation of Germany. A stark reminder, "The Red Army liberated Auschwitz. We do not forget that either."

However, Steinmeier accused the current Russian leadership of "historical lies" by citing the conflict in Ukraine as a continuation of the struggle against fascism. He deemed President Vladimir Putin as someone "glorifying imperial delusion, grave injustice, and grave crimes."

Similarly, Chancellor Julia Klöckner (CDU) called out Russia's "misuse of history" in her speech and voiced concern over the plight of women and girls in warzones.

Diplomatic representatives from various countries were invited to the commemoration in the German parliament - except those from Russia and Belarus, owing to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In Berlin-Treptow, flags of the former USSR were also banned around the Soviet memorial during the anniversary of the end of the war.

Steinmeier also castigated the USA. The United States, once instrumental in shaping the post-war international order based on international law, is now allegedly distancing itself from those very principles, a move Steinmeier found disturbing. "The oldest democracy in the world is now in danger."

Both incidents, the Russian war of aggression and America's deviation from its values, result in a "double rupture of an era," Steinmeier declared, stating that "the Russian war of aggression, America’s breach of values, that’s what marks the end of this long 20th century." As a result, Germany must now stand more firmly, militarily and diplomatically.

May 8 is celebrated as Victory in Europe Day in Europe, marking the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces in 1945, which ended World War II on the continent.

The commemoration in Berlin unfolded in the morning with an ecumenical service at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church. Later, Steinmeier, Klöckner, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), President of the Bundesrat Anke Rehlinger (SPD), and President of the Federal Constitutional Court Stephan Harbarth laid wreaths at the Memorial to the Victims of War and Tyranny.

Rehlinger focused on the "day of liberation from terror, war, and the inhuman ideology that originated in Germany," emphasizing the need to remember "the special historical responsibility of our people" to prevent a repeat of such atrocities.

The current commemorations serve as a stark reminder of the legacy of World War II while challenging us to address the discord of modern world politics, particularly involving Russia, Ukraine, and the USA.

  1. The European Union, with its unique history and geopolitical position, has a special role to play in the fight against modern-day strife and leadership disputes, particularly those involving Russia, Ukraine, and the USA, as highlighted by the ongoing commemoration of World War II.
  2. In his speech, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for misusing history and glorifying imperial delusion, a move that further exacerbates tensions in war-and-conflicts zones such as Ukraine.
  3. Despite the diplomatic tension, various countries were invited to the commemoration in the German parliament, except those from Russia and Belarus, possibly underscoring the need for a united front against terrorism and misuse of history in politics and general news.
  4. As the world grapples with the ramifications of the Russian war of aggression and America's deviation from its values, Germany must stand more firmly, militarily and diplomatically, to maintain the principles established after World War II and prevent the misuse of soil for acts of terrorism or imperialistic ambitions.
