Eye on Ukraine: 30-day Ceasefire Call Amidst Ongoing Conflict

War in Ukraine: Proposal for a 30-day ceasefire from Monday forthcoming, accompanied by the threat of severe sanctions against Moscow if disrespected by Russia and its allies

In the heart of Europe, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine has been suggested by Ukraine, alongside its major European allies and the United States. This comes after a meeting in Kiev between Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Ukrainian officials on Saturday, May 10th. The proposed ceasefire is set to commence next Monday, if approved by all parties.

During a joint press conference, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the ceasefire will primarily be monitored by the United States, with contributions from European nations. He also mentioned the potential for severe sanctions against any party that breaches the truce.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared on Twitter that Ukraine, along with its allies, stands ready for a complete and unconditional ceasefire on land, air, and sea for at least 30 days starting from Monday. He believes that a truce could pave the way for peace negotiations. The foreign minister also shared that Zelensky and the visiting European leaders discussed efforts towards peace with U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call.

The Kremlin's Stand: Russia Holds Out

The proposed ceasefire has been presented to Russia several times in recent weeks, but it has yet to be accepted. Russia is advocating for commitments on its demands first, especially a halt to Western arms deliveries to Ukraine.

On the American ABC channel, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov reiterated that a ceasefire should follow a halt to Western arms deliveries, otherwise it could provide an advantage to Ukraine. At present, Russian troops are advancing on the front and it is unclear what impact a ceasefire would have.

So far, Russia has yet to decisively respond to the proposal for a ceasefire. The Kremlin has declared a three-day truce, scheduled to end on Saturday night, which coincides with the celebrations of the victory over Nazi Germany.
