Tempest in the Middle East: Trump Announces Iran-Israel Truce, Yet Questions Remain

Iran-Israel war truce declared by Trump, now in force - War ceasefire between Iran and Israel now active, as per Trump's declaration.

In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump announced yesterday that Israel and Iran have reached an agreement on a ceasefire, set to kick off at midnight tonight. However, neither country has officially given the green light yet. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi hinted at Iran's eagerness for a peace if Israel reciprocates.

Despite Trump's proclamation, early this morning, Iran unleashed another volley of rockets at Israel. According to Irib, the Iranian state broadcaster, this was the "fifth wave" of attacks. Four lives were tragically claimed in an Iranian rocket attack on a residential building in Beersheba, as confirmed by Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical service.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran escalated on June 13, with Israel launching an extensive attack on Iranian nuclear facilities and military installations. Following this, Iran responded with a barrage of rockets and drones.

In a bold move, the US joined the fray overnight on Sunday, striking Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan with B-2 stealth bombers and GBU-57 bunker-busting bombs. The international community has long suspected Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, an allegation Teheran has staunchly denied.

As we await official confirmation from both parties, let's keep our fingers crossed for a peaceful resolution to this Mideast standoff. Stay tuned for updates from the Institute for the Study of War (CTP-ISW) in their June 24 Morning Update. In the interim, it seems we're still treading on shaky ground.
