Tit for Tat in Ukraine's War: Current Situation Unveiled
Post-German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius's Kiev visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for Germany's new arms package, worth 1.3 billion euros. The package includes cutting-edge Iris-T SLM air defense missile systems, anti-tank mines, and NATO 155 millimeter caliber artillery shells.
Zelenskyy referred to these new military aid assets as "a new strong support package from Germany," stating they would effectively protect cities from Russian terror. Germany has previously delivered three Iris-T SLM systems to Ukraine, with four more on the horizon. However, the status of German Taurus cruise missiles, long requested by Ukraine, remains unclear, according to Pistorius.
Meanwhile, EU Council President Charles Michel pledged his full support for Ukraine and Moldova, urging a quick start to EU accession negotiations. He sought to persuade the 27 EU heads of state and government to make a positive decision by December. However, EU Commission recommendations for these negotiations are still being reviewed by member countries.
The United Nations reported at least 10,000 civilian casualties since Russia's 21-month invasion of Ukraine. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva estimated that the actual count is "considerably higher," considering many unidentified bodies. Moreover, over 18,500 injured civilians have also been registered with UN assistance.
Elsewhere, the US government expresses apprehension regarding potential Russian-Iran collaborations, fearing Iran might supply missiles for use in Ukraine in return for defense cooperation. Such a move could further escalate the ongoing conflict.
