Ukrainian Advantage Growing in Black Sea Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi praised recent successes in the ongoing conflict with Russia, stating that his country has gained the upper hand in the Black Sea. Speaking at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC) in Kiev, Zelenskyi said, "We have seized the initiative from Russia in the Black Sea."

Fierce fighting continued along the 1000-kilometer front on land, with 62 battles between Ukrainian and Russian forces reported on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Many of these battles took place near the Donbass towns of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, where Russia launched several attacks. Russia also used combat drones to attack Ukraine in the south and east of the country during the night, causing an air alert.

Ukraine has experienced notable successes in the conflict, including the sinking of the Russian cruiser "Moskva" and the recapture of Snake Island off the Romanian coast in 2022. This year, Ukraine used Western precision weapons to disable Russian air defense positions, military airfields, and command centers on the Crimean peninsula. Several ships of the Black Sea Fleet were also heavily damaged.

The strategic implications of these successes are significant. Zelenskyi claimed that Russian forces had largely withdrawn from the western part of the Black Sea, giving Ukraine more control over the region. However, Russia can still bombard Ukrainian ports with combat drones or missiles from its position in the eastern part of the Black Sea.

The military background to Ukraine's successes can be attributed to innovative tactics with unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and drones. Ukrainian USVs have been used as mobile platforms for deploying aerial and kamikaze drones, enabling targets to be engaged with increased precision.

Russia's response to these challenges has included constructing a new naval base in Ochamchira, Abkhazia, to protect naval assets following heavy losses in the Black Sea. This base could potentially house vessels equipped with cruise missiles, increasing Russia's military presence in the region.

The conflict has had significant consequences for trade routes between Europe and Asia, with traditional routes being disrupted by the ongoing violence. Efforts are now being made to shift focus to the Middle Corridor, which runs through Georgia, and could potentially handle up to 11 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.

New Foreign Secretary in Kiev

The new British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, paid a visit to Kiev to offer support. In his statement, Cameron pledged continued moral, diplomatic, and economic support, as well as military aid for as long as necessary. Cameron also announced plans to support evacuees from frontline areas.

Russian Activist Sentenced for Protest Action

Russian anti-war activist and artist Alexandra Skochilenko was sentenced to seven years in prison in St. Petersburg for replacing price tags with slogans against the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Skochilenko had been arrested after her protest action in April 2022 and remained in custody despite being seriously ill. Her case sparked outrage internationally, and she was classified as a political prisoner by human rights organizations Amnesty International and Memorial.

The Importance of Today

Finland announced plans to close four border crossings to Russia near St. Petersburg on Friday night due to an increase in asylum seekers attempting to enter the country without valid documents. Meanwhile, Estonia has also reported more migrants attempting to enter without valid papers.

The conflict has also had significant implications for trade routes between Europe and Asia, with efforts being made to shift focus to the Middle Corridor. The Norwegian government's visit to Kiev signaled a renewed commitment to supporting Ukraine, and a new British Foreign Secretary arrived to offer continued support in the form of military, diplomatic, and economic aid.
