Walton-Verona Football Outlook 2025: Following the turbulent 2024 season, Walton-Verona's football coach is set to lead a more seasoned team next year
Walton-Verona Bearcats Prepare for 2025 Season with Optimism
As the 2025 football season approaches, the Walton-Verona Bearcats are gearing up for a promising campaign under the guidance of head coach Gary Pence. Last season, the team showed signs of improvement, ending their season in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Key Players
The Bearcats return eight offensive and six defensive starters for the upcoming season. Senior quarterback Avery Howe, a notable returnee, is expected to anchor the offense following a strong finish to the previous season, where he passed for 685 yards and 10 touchdowns in the final five games.
Senior wide receiver Brayden Donato is poised to be one of Howe's primary targets in the air, with Michael Oldfield, the leading receiver from the previous season, sidelined due to a knee injury sustained during spring 2025. Donato's role could be expanded as a result, making him a crucial player for the Bearcats.
Injury Concerns
Oldfield's injury during basketball in spring break is a significant setback for the Bearcats. His recovery will be crucial for the team's offensive strength, with a possible return in October.
2024 Season Recap
Last season, the Bearcats started with a 1-5 record under Pence, who took over just a few weeks before summer practice. However, the team showed resilience, winning four games in a row and qualifying for the Class 2A playoffs.
Coaching Continuity
Pence's full offseason with the players for the first time promises to bring growth and improvement to the team. With a 5-6 record in his first season, Pence is optimistic about an even better performance in 2025.
Scheduled Challenges
The Bearcats' 2025 schedule includes games against strong opponents like Bracken County on September 26 and defending 2A champion Beechwood on October 3. Pence aims to improve home game performance (the team was previously 0-5 at home but 5-1 on the road) and to secure a playoff game as a high seed in Class 2A, District 5.
Returning Stars
On defense, AJ Yutze, a junior, is the team's top returnee, having recorded a team-high 99 tackles. Andrew Lynn, a sophomore, is expected to fill the void left by Carter Daniels in the running game, as he is deemed "pound for pound our best athlete" by coach Gary Pence. Lynn will likely continue his double duties at safety in addition to running back.
Cooper Burch, a junior, made 79 tackles last season and is one of the returning starters in the defensive backfield along with Brayden Donato.
Looking Ahead
With a mix of returning experienced players, a tough schedule, and a focus on improving home performance to push for a strong playoff position, the Walton-Verona Bearcats are set for an exciting 2025 season. Pence's second year coaching sees potential for growth building on the 2024 season's late success.
