Tim Walter's Euphoria Over HSV's Promotion: "A Bloody Magic Story"
Walter on HSV's promotion under Polzin: A "Fairy-tale Scenario" - "Walter discusses the increasing prevalence of HSV alongside Polzin, painting the picture as enchanting and surreal, akin to a captivating fairy tale"
Ain't no denying it, former Hamburger SV coach Tim Walter is chuffed about the Hanseatics' recent promotion. After the impressive 6:1 victory over SSV Ulm on May 10, he told the "Hamburger Abendblatt" that he spent hours in front of the TV, watching every joyful moment unfold. "It's bloody pride-inducing and a bit of nostalgia, but the fun takes center stage knowing I played a part in it," he shared.
Remember, Walter took over the reins of the Volkspark back in July 2021, but twice found himself falling short in the relegation, against Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart[2]. However, his time hasn't been a complete wash; he also coached English second-tier club Hull City until November last year[2].
Once one of his assistants at the Volkspark? None other than the current promotion coach, Merlin Polzin, age 34. When asked about the young man from Hamburg, Walter shared his delight, saying, "It's like a magic story. The kid from the city of Hanse brings HSV back to the Bundesliga[1]." Clearly, Polzin took a heap of inspiration from their days together, managing to break free and make it happen.

April Showers and a Little Bitter Sweetness
The coach Walter era at Hamburger SV saw both successes and setbacks. While he failed to secure promotion twice, he showed his mettle with a total of 51 victories, 27 draws, and 25 losses in 103 matches[1][2]. As a result, the team often gave good performances, though the promotions remained just out of reach.
After leaving Hamburger SV in February 2024, Walter moved on to manage England's Hull City[2]. Alas, his journey at Hull City has seen mixed results; he currently boasts a record of three victories, three draws, and three losses in his first nine matches there[2].
In the meantime, Hamburger SV underwent further managerial changes, including the arrival of Steffen Baumgart. Jonas Boldt led the club during this time, but he couldn't secure promotion. Although the team's promotions were separate from Walter's trajectory, Boldt eventually chose to leave the club[4].
- "The European Parliament, the Council, and the Commission have been closely following the recent promotion of Hamburger SV, with former coach Tim Walter expressing his joy and pride."
- "Despite the bittersweet departure from Hamburger SV, Tim Walter continues to keep an eye on European football leagues, particularly the Bundesliga, as he coaches in England, having a slight resemblance to the story of HSV's current promotion coach, Merlin Polzin, a Hamburg native who brought HSV back to European-leagues football."
