Wacken Open Air 2025: Muddy Exits and Traffic Challenges
As Wacken Open Air 2025 nears its conclusion, thousands of metalheads are leaving the festival grounds, transforming the once vibrant venue into a muddy mess due to the heavy rain that hit on July 30.
In an effort to mitigate the traffic and safety issues caused by the challenging weather and ground conditions, the festival organizers strongly advise using public transport for arrival. Shuttle buses run between Itzehoe train station and the festival, free for ticket holders, and special bicycle parking is provided.
For those who chose to drive, the organizers urge patience and preparation. Drivers are advised to follow on-site traffic signs, digital displays, and instructions from traffic control and stewards. They should also be prepared with water and snacks as heavy traffic and muddy terrain affect vehicle departure, especially on the B430 and Elbe crossing routes.
Drivers stuck in mud should be pushed out gently rather than towed to avoid ground damage. In case of emergencies during departure, drivers should turn on their hazard lights and stay in their cars.
Despite the ongoing efforts, some incidents are still occurring during the departure process. A vehicle caught fire on the B430 towards Neumünster, leading to a full closure at Wapelfeld. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The police are rerouting traffic via the Kreisstraße 57 towards the B77 due to the accident.
To help alleviate the traffic congestion, the organizers are deploying 30 tractors to pull stuck vehicles from the waterlogged campsites. The departure is proceeding smoothly according to the police, but there is still a wait of around an hour at the Elbe crossing in Glückstadt-Wischhafen.
Looking ahead, Wacken 2026 is being promoted to build anticipation. The first bands announced for next year's event are Def Leppard, In Flames, and Powerwolf. Festival-goers can expect to be safely back home by Sunday evening (3rd August) at the latest.
