Vows to Eradicate Illicit Alcohol, Smuggling, and Gender-Based Violence in Siaya by CS Murkomen

In a recent development, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a crackdown on illicit alcohol, goods smuggling, and rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Siaya County. The initiative is set to be spearheaded by a multi-agency team.

Murkomen has also emphasised the need for regulation of the artisanal mining sector in Siaya County and other parts of the western region. He has suggested a conversation with the minister of mining to see how artisanal miners can be put in cooperatives. The CS believes that both the county government and intergovernmental level should agree on the best way to regulate the mining sector to protect the environment and lives.

Conflicts related to unregulated mining pose a threat to national security, the environment, and the livelihoods of residents, according to Murkomen. He has pointed out the challenge of unregulated artisanal mining in Siya County and other parts of the western region.

The CS has cautioned against the reemergence of youth gangs in the region, noting that some of those groups are drawn into political activities causing violence. Political competition, he said, should not put the youths at risk of criminal activities.

Siaya County has experienced a few security challenges due to its border location and economic activities. Murkomen has called for a collaboration between national and county government to deal with the selling of alcohol, particularly the locally brewed Chang'a, in huge quantities in the county. He has warned security forces to deal with the criminal agents in the region.

In an effort to discuss concerns from the public and security managers on the ground, Murkomen has held Jukwaa la Usalama forums across 40 counties. These forums aim to address the security challenges faced by various regions and find solutions to mitigate them.

The CS has not mentioned any new issues related to illicit brews, smuggling operations, or GBV cases in Siaya County, nor has he mentioned any new collaboration between national and county government to deal with these issues. He has also not issued any new warnings to security forces to deal with criminal agents in the region.
