The provincial riding of Arthabaska in Quebec is set to witness a hotly contested by-election on August 11, with at least ten candidates vying for the seat.

The by-election was triggered following the resignation of Éric Lefebvre, who left provincial politics after being elected as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party of Canada in the federal election held in April 2025. Lefebvre previously held the Arthabaska riding for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and won the seat in October 2022, capturing 51.75% of votes, a significant victory by more than 12,000 votes.

The CAQ is fielding Keven Brasseur to hold the riding, while the main party candidates include:

  • Éric Duhaime, leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ)
  • Alex Boissonneault, former Radio-Canada host, running for the Parti Québécois (PQ)
  • Keven Brasseur, former president of the CAQ’s youth commission, representing the CAQ
  • Pascale Fortin, a health-care worker for Québec solidaire (QS)
  • Chantale Marchand, representing the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ)

In addition to these main party candidates, there are others from smaller parties and independents, making a total of ten candidates running in the by-election.

The riding was previously held by the CAQ since 2012, but this by-election is seen as a competitive race primarily between PCQ's Duhaime and PQ's Boissonneault, with recent polls showing a tie between these two parties at 37% support each.

Advance polling for the by-election started today and will continue on Monday. The outcome of this by-election could have significant implications for the political landscape in Quebec.
