Voting Board Seeks Candidates Equipped with LED Screens for Position

Elections in the Philippines are taking a remarkable turn, with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) urging canvassing boards across regions to set up public viewing areas outfitted with LED screens and projectors. This initiative, primarily aimed at enhancing transparency and public engagement, has been adopted in Central Visayas (Region 7) and is likely to spread elsewhere.

In these viewing areas, the public can catch a glimpse of the electoral process in action, fostering trust and building confidence in the system. Accredited observers, representing political parties and citizens' groups, monitor both the polling stations and canvassing centers to ensure the integrity of the process.

To further verify the accuracy of the electronic counts, random manual audits are conducted in certain precincts. Additionally, the Comelec deploys a Transparency Server that receives and displays election data in real-time. This server is monitored by both the public and media, offering yet another layer of transparency.

While the viewing areas are primarily a step to enhance public watchability, the overall regulatory framework ensures a fair and transparent electoral process. For instance, restrictions on campaigning near power lines demonstrate the commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable voting environment.

Francisco Pobe, the Regional Director of Comelec in Region 7, expressed his confidence in the regions' readiness for the upcoming elections, stating, "We're 100 percent ready. Everything is in place, we're just waiting for May 12."
