Voters in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are seeeing a rise in popularity for the BVV party
The electoral wards in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are set for a change, following the Senate's determination and a swift review by the district oversight authority. The dispute over the electoral ward division for the House of Representatives in the district had been a point of contention for weeks between the district administration and the District Assembly (DA).
Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) announced that the district oversight authority has resolved the dispute, ruling in favour of the DA against the decision of the district administration led by Green district mayor Clara Herrmann. The disputed electoral ward, originally entirely on the Friedrichshain side, will remain within Friedrichshain as per the DA's alternative decision.
The DA, consisting of the Left, SPD, and CDU, made the alternative decision, as they have a majority in the DA. The electoral ward division favoured by the DA will be implemented, as stated in the decision obtained by the German Press Agency.
Critics accused the district administration's proposal of being an attempt to boost the Greens' election chances in Kreuzberg, given their traditional strong performance in the area compared to Friedrichshain. However, no relevant information was found about which parties collaborated in the District Assembly of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to support an alternative electoral district compensation proposal.
The district administration acknowledged the district oversight authority's decision in response to a request. The district oversight authority also confirmed the DA's right to make the alternative decision.
The electoral ward division proposed by the district administration has been invalidated by the district oversight authority. As a result of the Senate's determination, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg will have one fewer electoral ward than before for the election.
The election to the House of Representatives in September 2026 will proceed as planned, with the finalized electoral ward division. The decision by the district oversight authority puts an end to the controversy over the electoral ward division in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Several Berlin media outlets had previously reported on the dispute and the eventual ruling in favour of the DA.
No further changes to the electoral wards are expected in the lead-up to the election in September 2026. The disputes and decisions regarding the electoral ward division will not endanger the election date of September 20, 2026, as assured by Iris Spranger. The details of the redrawn electoral wards and their implications for the political landscape of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg remain to be seen.
