In a significant turn of events, US President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin later today in northern Alaska [1]. This meeting has sparked much interest, particularly in Germany, where a recent poll by Civey for news channel Welt TV reveals some intriguing insights.

The poll suggests that approximately 42% of Germans favour Ukrainian territorial concessions to end the ongoing conflict with Russia [2]. This finding indicates that a substantial portion of the German public might expect or accept some compromise involving Ukraine ceding territory, potentially influencing the context of Trump’s stance or expectations for the meeting.

However, when it comes to Trump's support for Ukraine during his meeting with Putin, reports following the August 15 summit in Alaska show that Trump pushed Europe and Ukraine to reach a deal with Russia and suggested he might delay earlier threatened tough sanctions against Russia [3]. This approach was seen by some European leaders as sidelining them and casting uncertainty on continued U.S. military support.

In contrast, polls from the U.S. show strong and growing American public support for backing Ukraine “for as long as it takes,” with nearly two-thirds sympathizing with Ukraine and support increasing among Republicans as well [1]. However, Trump’s personal stance in the summit appeared more aligned with pushing for a negotiated settlement including territorial compromises, which aligns somewhat with German public sentiment but contrasts with broader American popular opinion.

It's essential to note that the US President does not have the power to make any binding promises to the Kremlin without the consent of Ukraine [1]. Any territorial concession would require a change in the Ukrainian constitution, a decision that lies solely with Ukraine.

The poll conducted by Civey for Welt TV in Berlin showed that a majority of Germans view the negotiating power as lying clearly or rather with Putin [2]. However, 30% of Germans remain undecided about the negotiating power between Trump and Putin [2]. Only 15% of Germans attribute greater negotiating power to Trump [2].

So far, Putin has shown no signs of backing down [1]. The survey conducted by Civey for Welt TV is said to be representative [2]. However, 23% of Germans surveyed are undecided about Trump's intentions regarding Ukraine [2]. A worrying 63% of Germans expressed skepticism that Trump will support Ukraine [2].

Trump plans to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine and an end to the war during his meeting with Putin [1]. It remains to be seen how this meeting will unfold and what implications it will have for Ukraine's future.

  1. Despite the European Union's commitment to the development of a European strategy for the fight against terrorism, the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the ensuing negotiations between US President Trump and Russian President Putin, has sparked intrigue among Germany's public, with a significant portion advocating for Ukrainian territorial concessions to end the conflict.
  2. The specified poll reveals that general news regarding the politics surrounding war-and-conflicts, such as the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin and potential territorial concessions by Ukraine, has a considerable impact on the German public's sentiments, with a substantial portion expressing skepticism about Trump's support for Ukraine.
