Vote for the new mayor of Marl happening on September 28th
Marl, Germany, is set to hold runoff elections on September 28, 2025, for the mayoral and county councilor positions. These elections are necessary as none of the candidates secured a majority in the previous election.
For the mayoral race, Thomas Terhorst (CDU/FDP) and Werner Arndt (SPD) will face off. Terhorst received 43.28% of the votes in the previous election, while Arndt garnered 31.30%.
In the race for county councilor, Bodo Klimpel (CDU/FDP) and Dr. Karsten Schneider (SPD) will compete.
No separate election notice will be issued for the runoff elections. Eligible voters in Marl aged 16 and over are encouraged to participate.
Mail-in voting materials will be available starting Friday, September 19. Around 14,500 Marl residents have already requested mail-in voting for the runoff elections. The deadline for mail-in voting is Friday, September 26, at 3 p.m. Voters who had previously requested mail-in voting for the local elections will automatically receive the materials for the runoff elections. Those who wish to request mail-in voting materials can do so informally by email, post, or in person at the election office starting immediately.
The polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the runoff elections. Voters must bring their election notice, personal ID, or, in the case of EU citizens, their valid identity card or passport to vote at the polling station.
The election office is located at the island-VHS at Wiesenstraße 22, and its hours have been adjusted for the runoff elections. The office will remain open until 3 p.m. on Friday, September 26, before the runoff election.
