Volvo's Final Ford-Rooted Gem: The V40

Introduced between 2012 and 2019, the Volvo V40 served as a nod to the brand's Ford-influenced past. Built atop the C1 platform, shared with the Ford C-Max and several others, its underlying structure bore resemblance to the first V40 generation (2004-2012). However, Volvo took this modest foundation and transformed it, leading to significant improvement in terms of design and reliability in the second generation.

A New Form of Familiarity

Measuring 4.37 meters long and boasting a departure from Volvo's traditionally angular designs, the V40 II embraced a bolder, softer look with its gentle curves and lines. While it may not offer the most generous space in the rear or trunk (extendable from 335 to 1032 liters), the interior felt cozy and professional, with Volvo's signature cool elegance.

A Range of Variants

No matter your preference, Volvo had several V40 options available. The V40 Cross Country, introduced in 2013, offered increased ground clearance, a raised seating position, and a unique front bumper. Those who preferred something more sporty could opt for the R-Design variant, with its special grille, rims, and colors, and an optional sports suspension.

Power and Efficiency

Volvo opted for a variety of petrol and diesel engines, some incorporating Ford powerplants during the initial stages, before transitioning to the brand's own four-cylinder options. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models were available, alongside six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions. Leading the pack was the five-cylinder T5, delivering 187 kW/254 hp.

Safety, Comfort, and Quality

With a price tag that reflected Volvo's unwavering commitment to quality, even the base T2 began at 23,000 euros. Harkening back to Volvo's safety-first roots, the V40 II scored five stars in the EuroNCAP, followed by an array of sophisticated safety features, such as the under-hood airbag designed to reduce pedestrian impact injuries.

A Consistent Performer

The Volvo V40 II exhibited impressive showing during its annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) inspections, outperforming most of its competition in various disciplines, such as emissions and safety. However, issues with axle springs and dampers might become prevalent in older models, suggesting cautious evaluation for those in the market for a used V40.

The Tough Compact Champion

Despite occasional chassis-related hiccups, the Volvo V40 II has earned its reputation as a reliable, high-quality companion, ensuring robust demand and solid used market value, with prices for older models beginning at around 5,000 euros.
